The town’s name is derived from its history as a railroad depot. The town was originally known as Roberts. In 1885, O. M. Roberts sold 100 acres of land to the Texas Central Railroad. This land was near the South Fork of the Sabine River. The railroad built the town on the land. The Texas Central Railroad, which had acquired the land, reorganized as the Texas Midland Railroad in 1886. Hetty Green was one of the bondholders of the defunct railroad, and a new town was born.
